Top 5 Best Beaches for Photos in Charleston, South Carolina

If you’re searching for the best beaches for photos in Charleston, South Carolina, you’re in the right place. As a local family photographer, I’ve explored every stretch of shoreline from Folly to Edisto, and I’ve narrowed it down to my top five. Whether you’re planning a family session, celebrating a milestone, or just want to capture your time in the Lowcountry, these beaches offer the perfect natural backdrop for timeless photos.

Each beach on this list is unique in its vibe, accessibility, and scenery. Here are my top picks for the most photogenic beaches near Charleston:

1. Folly Beach

A couple stands on a deserted beach with dry, leafless trees. The man, wearing a black sweater, has his arm around the woman in a gray sweater, who touches her pregnant belly. They look into the distance, surrounded by sparse vegetation and a calm sea.

Folly Beach is one of the best beaches for photos near Charleston thanks to its variety and natural charm. The Folly Beach County Park offers easy beach access and restrooms—great for families with young kids. It’s convenient, clean, and has wide sandy spaces perfect for golden hour sessions (note: there is a small parking fee).

For a more adventurous and dramatic look, head toward the Morris Island Lighthouse and the nearby Driftwood Beach, a stunning location with weathered trees, calm surf, and a quiet vibe. Just be prepared for about a 1/3-mile walk to reach it.

2. Isle of Palms (IOP)

Two side-by-side images of a family on the beach. In the first image, expertly captured by a Charleston beach photographer, a man and woman stand close together, each holding one of their two small children, with an older child standing in front of them. The second image shows the family walking away hand-in-hand with the ocean in the background.

A family of seven poses on a sandy beach with gentle waves in the background. The group includes two adults and five children dressed in casual summer attire, with some barefoot. They stand closely together, smiling warmly at the camera. The sky is lightly overcast.

Isle of Palms is not only beautiful, it’s also one of the most convenient beaches for photography near Charleston. There’s free parking, wide open beaches, grassy dunes, and lovely soft light at sunset. It’s perfect for families staying nearby and is especially popular for large family group sessions during vacation.

3. Kiawah Island

A group of eleven people, including three children, stand barefoot on a beach in light-colored clothes. The adults are gathered closely, smiling and embracing each other as the sun sets over the ocean in the background. Captured by a talented Kiawah Island photographer, the moment radiates warmth and connection.

A family of three stands on a garden path with greenery and pink flowers in the background. The woman is holding a baby, and both are wearing white dresses. The man, standing next to them, is dressed in a white shirt and beige shorts. Captured by a Kiawah Island family photographer, they are all smiling.

For those staying on the island, Kiawah offers some of the best beach photo locations in the Charleston area. Gated and peaceful, the beaches here are clean, quiet, and surrounded by nature. It’s a fantastic setting for more private family sessions with fewer distractions and soft, natural tones.

4. Seabrook Island

An extended family poses barefoot in the sand dunes at sunset on one of the best beaches for photos in Charleston, South Carolina. The group includes grandparents, parents, and young children dressed in coordinated summer outfits, surrounded by tall beach grass and soft white sand.

Like Kiawah, Seabrook Island is a gated community, so access is limited to guests and residents—but if you’re staying here, you’re in for a treat. It’s one of the most private and scenic beaches for photos in the Charleston area, with beautiful dunes and wide stretches of beach. Perfect for quiet, heartfelt moments and multigenerational sessions.

5. Edisto Beach & Botany Bay

A family of four walks on a beach, holding hands. The parents are in the center with a little girl on the left and a boy on the right. The sandy shore is scattered with seashells and driftwood. In the background, leafless trees stand stark against a cloudy sky.

A pregnant woman, a man, and two young children sit together on a fallen palm tree on a sandy beach—one of the Best Beaches for Photos in Charleston SC—smiling at the camera with tropical trees in the background.

If you’re willing to venture a little farther from downtown, Edisto Beach and nearby Botany Bay offer some of the most visually stunning photo spots in South Carolina. Botany Bay in particular features dramatic driftwood, unique landscapes, and a truly untouched feel. One important note: the beach disappears at high tide, so we’ll need to plan accordingly. But when the tide is right, it’s pure magic.

⚠️ Note About Sullivan’s Island

While Sullivan’s is a beautiful spot, commercial photography is prohibited on the beach unless you’re staying at a beachfront home. For this reason, I typically recommend the other locations listed above for your Charleston beach photo session.
